Peking Black Southern Pea
Originally from Africa, the Peking Black is an heirloom bean. Vigorous grower on 5 foot vines will provide an abundance of delicious black peas. Southern peas have the highest protein content of any vegetarian food. Tolerant of poor soil and shade, it is perfectly suited for inter-planting with corn. As a legume, it will fix nitrogen in the soil. An excellent “black bean” for Hawaii’s tropical climates. For quick cooking start in the evening, bring to a boil, wrap with a towel and let set overnight. Finish cooking the next day with fresh water. Grow on a tall trellis at least 4ʻ high.
